Song To A Tree

for Rachel

Turning golden
the burnish of your leaves
is what we see
in this late light.

The shadow of your trunk
hiding and holding
the strength you live by -
and the sap-deep scars.

Peeling bark sheds itself
only to reveal what's new,
and just how old you are.
If you were not a tree

you would sing to us.
It would be a song
that would simply rise
out of the earth -

which is to say, in our hearts.
